SCOCEF Bursary Recipients
Scottish Clans of Canada Education Fund recently awarded bursaries to five students attending the Pictou County Celtic Workshop held at the East Pictou Middle School in Sutherlands River Pictou County this past summer. Workshops for piano, drums, guitar, bodhran, mandolin, step dancing, and Gaelic language were held for youth and teens. Francis MacDonald, organizer of the event stated, when they hear the music, dance, or language they can relate it all back to their ancestors. The workshops concluded with a ceilidh on the final evening.
One of the bursary recipients Alyx MacDonald (see above) wrote the following after attending the workshop: I had a great learning experience in the Pictou County fiddle camp. The teachers were really nice and all had different styles of music that were very fun and different to learn. I learned how to read music and play by ear better which really helped me. I really liked some of the songs that the teachers picked out because they were really fun and hard which made it a challenge.
